Vice President, Business Development

The Vancouver Convention & Exhibition Centre, with its distinctive five sails roofline, is a Vancouver waterfront landmark with an international reputation. The VCEC was recently awarded the industry-coveted Apex Award for ‘World's Best Convention Centre', and is presently amidst an expansion that will triple its scale and open up new international markets. The expanded facility will be operational by 2008 and will function as the international media centre for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games.

In order for the facility to prepare for, and support, this tremendous growth and development, a Vice President, Business Development role has been created. Reporting to the General Manager, and as a member of the senior executive team, the VP, Business Development will be a thought leader and key driver around market development and sales force leadership. They will lead an organizational culture change toward a more sales driven organization, develop and close new business and revenue generation opportunities, and maximize yield in order to deliver a financial and operational objective.

The successful candidate will be a seasoned and energetic sales and marketing leader with a proven track record of managing multi-disciplinary teams including business development, sales and marketing communications, within a growing, dynamic organization. He/she has played a key role in improving an organization's position in the marketplace by successfully operationalizing key strategies. This individual is a highly strategic and effective business leader with impeccable skills in sales force leadership and relationship building. They will bring a worldly perspective, ideally gained through international sales experience.

Marketing Communications Manager

The Communications Manager works closely with the management team to deliver a comprehensive program of corporate communications, media relations, writing / editorial and special event management activities on behalf of the Vancouver Convention & Exhibition Centre. This position is responsible for developing and executing a wide range of activities that will position the VCEC amongst client, community and governmental groups. It supports the activities of senior staff in their dealings with community and government issues, sales staff in their dealings with clients and operational staff in their dealings with industry peer groups.

Department: Marketing Communications
Reporting to: VP Business Development

Responsibilities

•  Media Relations: Develop strategic media plan to support VCEC community and market objectives with both local and trade media; lead and plan communications in response to media inquiries; initiate media activities such as interviews, press conferences and media liaison; liaise with other industry partners on media relations issues and requirements; research, prepare and distribute media releases

•  Writing and Editorial Services: Design and provide media-related services as required to VCEC clients; develop and manage issue and crisis communications systems and protocol; maintain media records to ensure ongoing access; develop annual editorial plan to respond to VCEC publication requirements; create and prepare copy and editorials; originate and distribute feature articles; design and develop industry presentations and promotional materials as required

•  Special Events: Direct the execution of special events and promotional activities as required; develop and maintain community, business, industry and political contact lists; design and develop special events related to VCEC community and industry activities; direct and coordinate the activities of related contractors

•  Industry Committee/Functions: Actively participate in North American and International Industry Organizations; represent and promote VCEC as required with local industry organizations, community groups and trade-related organizations; participate in senior staff meetings as required to support operating, sales and marketing functions; direct and supervise sub contractors specific to this area of responsibility. 

Position Specifications

Qualifications and Experience:

•  Diploma in marketing, media relations or corporate communications, related discipline or equivalent credentials
•  2 - 3 years general business experience
•  5 years progressive experience in a marketing environment

Event Manager

The following 12 - 15 month full-time contract (maternity leave) position is now available:

We are currently seeking a service oriented individual to join our client services team (CST) and transition our clients from post sales through to post event in a professional and seamless fashion. An excellent communicator, the Event Manager is proficient at b uilding relationships with existing and new clients, industry partners, suppliers and internal clients to ensure success for each event booked into the VCEC with the primary objective of generating economic benefit to the Province of BC .

Department: Client Services
Reporting to: Manager, Client Services

Responsibilities

•  Client Relations: Understanding clients' overall event objectives and communicating the information between CST members, staff, and suppliers; manage multiple number of client events; strategize with Event Managers on potential problem areas or conflicts; negotiating mutually satisfactory agreements between client demands and facility policies, regulations and event operations

•  Contract Negotiations: Satisfy contractual obligations including insurance requirements; ensure client information is updated in the reservations software program (EBMS); prepare pre-event costing for client; prepare post-event charges for billing purposes; prepare and monitor financial event budgets and forecasting

•  Event Management and Supervision: Communicate clients' overall event needs to the CST members, staff, and suppliers; manage multiple number of client events; strategize with Event Managers on potential problem areas or conflicts; negotiate mutually satisfactory agreements between client demands and facility policies, regulations and event operations; supervise suppliers and frontline staff during events with MODs; coordinating multi client use of facility with other Event Managers as well as with other tenants in the building

•  Event Organization & Coordination: Provide on-site client liaison during show hours; coordinate and supervise event move-ins, set-ups and move-outs; provide problem solving and support for clients; brief staff re event details; supervise internal and external suppliers during event; meet weekly with Sales and Food & Beverage Managers regarding event issues; and lead catering services in the coordination of food and beverage service

Position Specifications

Qualifications and Experience:

•  Diploma in hospitality, tourism or related discipline
•  2 - 3 years general or business experience in the event or client service industry
•  1 – 2 years supervisory experience
•  Exposure to Event Business Management Systems (EBMS) or a general central reservations system is a definite asset
•  Must be available to work flexible hours based on client and business needs
